Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery continues to be one of the most common and successful surgical procedures with high expectations from patients.

With advances in technology, small incision surgery has been developed and rehabilitation times have been reduced. Cataracts can now be operated on safely under local anaesthetic in a day care or short stay setting.

The technology used for a cataract operation involves high frequency ultrasound and is called phaco emulsification. It allows the lens to be removed through an incision which is less than 3mm in size and is designed to be self sealing. Good vision can be achieved within a few hours of an operation.

A cataract operation involves removing the lens of the eye and replacing it with an implanted lens which sits inside the eye supported by the original lens capsule.
