Myopia (Short sight)
What is Myopia?
Myopia or Short sight is a hereditary problem and develops
through the teens, affecting 20% of the population. Myopia
is where
the light is
focused infront of the retina so that images in the distance
appear out of focus.
Causes of Myopia
Myopia occurs when the eyeball is slightly longer
than usual causing light rays to
focus at a point in front of the retina, rather than directly
on its surface.
Myopia or short sight is hereditary and usually develops
in childhood or in the teens. Myopia may stabilize
at a certain point, although sometimes it deteriorates with
age, known
as myopic creep.
Diagnosis of Myopia
Myopia can cause headaches and eyestrain. An exam
by an eye care professional will indicate most vision problems.
Treatments for Myopia
Myopia can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses
and refractive eye surgery.
The choice of treatment should be discussed with your eye
care practitioner. The most suitable form of correction will
depend on your prescription and lifestyle requirments.
