Strabismus
What is Strabismus?
Strabismus is where one or
both eyes turns independently of the other
eye so that both eyes cannot be aligned simultaneously.
strabismus is commonly referred to as crossed eyes.
Causes of Strabismus
Strabismus can often be a genetic problem, and most cases
of strabismus are are due to the brain rather than muscle
problems.
There are different types of strabismus, each with different
causes. Types of Strabismus include: Esotropia, Infantile
Esotropia, Congenital Esotropia, Accommodative Esotropia,
Exotropia,
Hypertropia.
Diagnosis of Strabismus
Symptoms include
• Turned or crossed eye
• Squinting
• Double vision
Detailed eye tests used to evaluate the alignment of the
eyes will reveal cases of Strabismus. The eye
muscles will be tested to determine the strength of the extraocular
muscles.
Treatments for Strabismus
Treatment will depend on
the patient's age, the cause of
the problem, and the severity. Treatments
include patching, corrective glasses, prisms, and surgery.
Surgery can be carried out on adults and children
to straighten a crossed eye.
